De La Concha Hosts Avo

A full house welcomed Avo at De la Concha earlier this month. The genius behind the Avo Campanero attended the cigar dinner to celebrate his brand, show his appreciation to the smokers who enjoy his work … and play a little music. More than 30 guests filled the store to enjoy a full meal catered by nearby restaurant Rue 57 and an open bar tended by a former Miss Tennessee (2006).

This was the first in-store event after the summer, kicking off what is likely to be a busy fall at De La Concha. With that in mind, let us know what types of event you’d like to attend of the rest of the year – we’re always looking for ideas.

On September 1, 2009, De La Concha will host a dinner featuring Avo Cigars with our special guest Avo Uvezian. Avo Uvezian was born in 1926 in Beirut to a talented musical family. Avo studied piano and composition at the renowned Julliard School of Music and during his time in the army, developed a love for cigars. After his army service, which ended in 1953, Avo played with some of the great jazz musicians of the 50’s and 60’s. This multilingual jazz musician and businessman moved to Puerto Rico, and in the early 1980’s he opened a restaurant and piano bar.

But he continued to search for the perfect cigar. In 1982 he traveled to the Dominican Republic in search of the finest tobaccos and the best factory for making his cigars. It was there that he met Hendrik Kelner and a partnership was born. In 1986 Avo and Hendrik produced 100,000 cigars. By 1988 the first Avo cigars were sold in New York. Today, three million cigars bearing the name of the jazz pianist are enjoyed by aficionados all over the world each year.
